The Directorate for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in northern Jowzjan province says it burned 69 musical instruments in the provincial capital, Sheberghan, on Wednesday, 7 October.
According to Pajhwok Afghan News, the directorate's spokesman, Mawlawi Muhibullah, said the instruments had been collected over the past month by muhtasibs (morality inspectors) and staff of related departments from different parts of Sheberghan city. About 1.5 tonnes of expired and substandard food items, including drinks and sweets, as well as medicines, were burned alongside them.
The spokesman said the items were set alight in the Dasht-e Laili area of Sheberghan in the presence of representatives of the provincial police command, the intelligence directorate, the environmental protection department and virtue and vice officials.
KabulNow also reported the burning, describing it as part of the enforcement of restrictions on music in the province. The outlet said officials of ا.ا.ا have confiscated and destroyed musical instruments in several provinces since 2021.
KabulNow noted that nearly 200 instruments were burned in Logar in September and more than 800 in Khost in May this year. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has also documented measures taken to enforce restrictions on music in its reports.
