Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has told UN Secretary-General António Guterres that Afghan territory must not be used against Pakistan or any other country.
According to Business Recorder, The Nation and Afghanistan International, the two met in Islamabad on Tuesday during Guterres's two-day visit to Pakistan. Zardari said Pakistan was a committed partner in the global fight against terrorism, had made enormous sacrifices and continued to face terrorism from groups operating from Afghan territory. He said Islamabad had also shared evidence of external support for proxy groups targeting Pakistan.
During the visit, Zardari conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan's highest civil awards, on Guterres. Pakistan's Press Information Department said it was the first time Pakistan had given the award to a UN Secretary-General.
Guterres thanked Pakistan for hosting millions of Afghans and said the United Nations would work with Pakistan to ensure that Afghan returns are voluntary, safe and dignified.
ا.ا.ا has previously rejected such allegations, saying it will not allow Afghan territory to be used against other countries. Afghanistan International reported that tensions between the two sides have grown in recent months, with border clashes and Pakistani air strikes inside Afghanistan.
