The interior ministry of ا.ا.ا says its special police forces have arrested four men in Kabul who allegedly planned to attack the office and staff of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) with explosives.
Ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Qani made the claim on Wednesday, 7 October, in a video released on social media that also showed what were presented as confessions by the detainees, Afghanistan International reported. According to the ministry, the men are residents of Panjshir and Kapisa, belong to the National Resistance Front (NRF) and were detained in different parts of Kabul along with weapons and military equipment.
In the video, the detainees also say they carried out earlier blasts in Kabul, including in the 500 Families area and near Sheikh Zayed hospital, according to Afghanistan International. The Spanish news agency EFE, which also reported the arrests, said no precise details were given about the date or place of the arrests or the identities of the suspects.
The NRF rejected the claim, calling the video "intelligence propaganda" and saying the men shown in it work for the intelligence service of ا.ا.ا. The front said its rules forbid attacks on civilians and on domestic or foreign civilian institutions, and it asked UNAMA to question the detainees independently.
It is not clear under what conditions the statements were recorded, and no evidence linking the men to the NRF has been made public. Afghanistan International noted that the UN has previously documented cases of detainees being tortured and forced to confess. According to EFE, UN offices in Afghanistan have been attacked in the past, including in Mazar-i-Sharif in 2011.
