The fifth general and international Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) exhibition opened on Wednesday at the Afghanistan International Exhibition Centre in Kabul, bringing together hundreds of Afghan and foreign companies.
About 600 booths are displaying goods ranging from food, medicines and dairy products to construction materials, handicrafts, carpets, plastics and iron products. The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI), which organises the event, says the fair runs until 13 October at the exhibition centre in Chaman-e-Hozuri. The chamber had earlier said representatives from more than 20 countries, including Russia, India, Türkiye and Japan, were expected to attend.
Opening the event, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the ا.ا.ا's deputy prime minister for economic affairs, described the exhibition as a platform to present Afghanistan's economic potential, support domestic production and widen trade links with the region. He said every country has comparative or absolute advantages in producing goods, and that these advantages drive regional and global trade.
Baradar cited the recently opened Wakhan road to the Chinese border as an example of efforts to boost regional connectivity, saying the route could link China with European markets through Afghanistan and make the country a transit hub. He said the government wanted to turn Afghanistan's borders "from points of threat into points of connection" for economic partnerships.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Nooruddin Azizi invited mutually beneficial foreign investment and said Afghanistan would not allow its raw minerals to be exported in the future.
Officials have said contracts worth more than $700 million were signed between Afghan and foreign traders at last year's edition of the fair.
